A breakthrough process change was needed to make the business model viable
When I started to lead a team of Engineers and a R&D operation, the typical turnaround time for a commercialized process development to replace direct bonded glass on smartphone displays was about 2 month.
The capacity was not sufficient to support the number of the new models that were being released in the pipeline by customer.
The capacity was not scalable in a short period of time and would have required significant CAPEX and training. A breakthrough process change was needed.
Adopting a product agnostic approach in solution design
The process at the time was fully customized for each new model. The customization was rooted into the fundamentals of the mechanical design.
Coached and led solution reengineering effort with focus on the following design principles:
Minimizing development time for new models in future
Minimizing production change over
Minimizing the investment needed for future model releases
Focussing on product agnostic approach in solution design
Focus on screen bonding technology and separate product from technology
Building standardized core process and cover specific features through minor tooling
Slashed NPI process for new phones from 2.5 months to 2 weeks
The capex requirement for new model release was reduced by 80%
Production change over was reduced to 15 minutes and could be accommodated within shift break
Capacity constraint was removed
Recognition from customer for achievement
